Apple iPhone is world's most popular smartphone

Recent figures suggest that Apple's iPhone is the most popular mobile phone in the world.
Research compiled by analyst firm Gartner suggests that the iPhone accounted for 23.8 per cent of all smartphones sold during the last quarter of 2011.
According to the research group, 149 million smartphones were sold across the globe during the fourth quarter, which took the total to 472 million devices throughout the year. The iPhone accounted for 19 per cent of all smartphones sold during the year.
Gartner also said that Apple had become the third largest vendor of mobile devices in the world behind Nokia and Samsung.
"Western Europe and North America led most of the smartphone growth for Apple during the fourth quarter of 2011," said Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner.
Apple could take over from Nokia as the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in the near future if the Finnish firm continues its poor financial record of the previous year, which saw them post a net loss of €1.2 billion ($1.47 billion) in 2011.
