AT&T ships record number of smartphones

28/01/2012

AT&T has reported its figures for the fourth quarter of 2011 which show that the company achieved a record number of smartphone activations, which could be as a result of more people looking to recycle their mobile phones in favour of the devices.

The firm reported consolidated revenue of US$32.5 billion ($30.5 billion), up 3.6 per cent or $1.1 billion when compared with the same quarter last year. The carrier sold 9.4 million smartphones during the quarter, which is 50 per cent more than they have ever managed to sell previously.

“Looking ahead, we start 2012 with the best visibility we’ve had in some time, and we’re well positioned to deliver solid results - including continued revenue growth with margin expansion," said AT&T chairman and chief executive officer Randall Stephenson.

This news comes after Nokia posted huge losses for 2011 and the fourth quarter of that year despite encouraging sales on its Lumia 800 line from October to December.
