Aussies 'are obsessed with smartphones'

21/06/2012

Australians have an obsession with smartphones that is changing the way they use the internet, new research has indicated.

According to a study by TechSci Research, the increased take-up of the devices in the country has resulted in a change in the way Australians use the web, with mobile internet penetration over 50 per cent and expected to continue climbing.

Use of mobile internet could be further accelerated by the introduction of 4G technology and the Australian government plans to auction off the 4G mobile spectrum to operators in April 2013.

Smartphones accounted for over a third (37 per cent) of all handset sales in Australia last year, with Apple and Samsung dominating the market.

The firms, which manufacture the iPhone and Galaxy range of smartphones respectively, held 50 per cent of all smartphone sales in 2011.

Research director at TechSci Research Karan Chechi said the Australian market "is expected to get consolidated with time", adding: "It is estimated that small vendors would be eaten up by large vendors like Samsung and Apple to kill the competition starting from 2015."
