Facebook to launch new mobile phone
30/05/2012
Social networking giant Facebook is set to launch its own mobile phone by next year, revolutionising the way in which people stay connected.
Just a week after the company's less than stellar start on the stock exchange comes reports that it is beefing up its engineering staff to bring out a Facebook smartphone in 2013.
New York Times cited unnamed sources suggesting that the firms had hired a significant number of smart mobile phone engineers.
The news provider claimed that the site's founder Mark Zuckerberg is worried that if it doesn't release its own phone, Facebook will just become an app on other platforms.
Principal analyst of devices and platforms at Ovum Tony Cripps said it wouldn't be a surprise to see the site go down this route.
"Facebook will have seen Google's and Apple's strong position in devices as the best means to corral and control the ecosystem of consumers and third parties in the mobile environment," he added.
