First 4G phone launched in Australia

26/01/2012

The first 4G mobile phone has been made available in Australia and could encourage a mass recycling of outmoded mobile phone handsets.

HTC's Velocity 4G will be available on the Telstra 4G network and promises download speeds 17 times faster than current 3G handsets, reports the Herald Sun.

Unfortunately 4G coverage is only available within five kilometres of the centre of the country's largest cities.

According to industry experts, the adoption of 4G technology will pave the way for next generation apps that will rely on huge amounts of data.

Mobile director at Telstra Andrew Volard told the news provider: "We have four [handsets] in development and we're looking at a 4G tablet that will also come in due course. It's going to be one of our major focuses in 2012."

Other players are also getting involved in 4G rollout, with network operator Optus announcing at the end of last year that it would be entering the fray.
