Galaxy S3 sales extends Samsung's lead over Apple
Sales of the new Samsung Galaxy S3 have helped the Korean conglomerate to extend its lead over Apple in the smartphone market, according to Juniper Research.
In the second quarter of 2012, the firm estimates that Samsung shifted 52.1 million smartphones, which is just over double the number shipped by chief rival Apple (26 million).
Apple released its figures yesterday and despite a marked increase in the number of iPads sold during the three-month period, the results were disappointing as people await the release of the new iPhone 5.
Juniper Research also noted that Sony continues to underperform in the smartphone market when compared with the big two, despite the size of the company.
Indeed, research analyst at the firm Daniel Ashdown noted: "Sony should be doing better: it, like Samsung, has a global name and the Xperia brand is well-established but its marketing and products have been disappointing so far."
