Mobile phone towers planned for oval
18/02/2012
Telstra and Optus will work together on the 30-metre mobile phone tower sandwiched between the Birallee sporting fields in Wodonga, Victoria.
The companies say that data usage has doubled in the past year due to the uptake in smartphones and tablets and the towers are necessary to deal with the additional pressure.
Telstra Riverina Murray Region general manager Loretta Willaton told the Border Mail that public meetings will be heard next week to try and allay fears about the towers.
She added that Wodonga is one of the fastest-growing regional centres in Victoria, which is putting increasing demand on the existing towers.
“Obviously there has been a huge uptake in iPhones with many people using them as their GPS in the car, but people are also using tablets and wireless modems on laptops," she told the news provider.
People that are having issues with mobile phone coverage in the country could soon have the issue resolved after the matter was brought up in parliament recently.
