Recycle mobile phone: iPad and Kindle Fire not ready to overtake laptops

03/05/2012

Despite taking all the headlines late in 2011 and earlier this year with the launch of both Amazon's Kindle Fire and Apple's latest iPad, the devices' popularity do not match up with laptops just yet.

One in three respondents in an ongoing tracking study conducted by ABI Research said they plan on purchasing a laptop computer in the first half of 2012.

This compares to the 16 per cent of people that said they will be acquiring a media tablet in the first six months of the year.

The iPad 3 was extremely popular on its arrival into the market in March with many people having delays in getting their pre-ordered devices shipped to them such was the demand from citizens.

Consumer research group director Jeff Orr said the sheer number of competitors entering the tablet market will whittle down Apple's dominance in the near future.

"This has created a near-term opportunity for the incremental purchase of media tablets.  Consumer interest also remains strong for laptops, which include the new, slimmer Ultrabook segment," Mr Orr was quoted as saying.
