Recycle mobile phone: Smartphone sales to top 1.7bn by 2017

09/05/2012

Research firm Ovum believes the smartphone market will sell 1.7 billion devices by 2017, with a large rise in the number of people purchasing Google Android-operated devices.

According to the group's research, smart handsets will outperform the rest of the mobile phone market, growing at a compound annual rate of 24.9 per cent in the period between 2011 and 2017.

It expects that by 2017, Android-based smartphones will make up 48 per cent of the whole market, while Apple is expected to reach 27 per cent of the industry.

This Android dominance is due to the amount of mobile operators who use the OS.

Principal analyst at Ovum Adam Leach said Windows Phone will have established itself as a viable smartphone OS by 2017.

"Although it will remain behind Android in terms of shipment volumes, Apple will continue to be a key player and innovator in the smartphone market over the forecast period," he continued.
