Samsung 'overtakes' Nokia in mobile phone shipments
Samsung has overtaken Nokia to become the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones, research firm Strategy Analytics has confirmed.
A number of analysts had announced earlier this month that they believed the first quarter figures would show that Samsung had sold appreciably more handsets that their Finnish rival.
Nokia had been sitting at top spot since 1998 after overtaking Motorola, however its 83 million shipments in the first three months of the year were not enough to stave off Samsung, which managed 93 million sales.
Lee Sei-Cheol of Meritz said the impending release of the Galaxy SIII in May will ensure sales will continue to rocket for Samsung.
He added that the smartphone market is virtually a two-horse race with Apple and Samsung leading all of their rivals.
Head of investor relations at Samsung Robert Yi added: "We cautiously expect our earnings momentum to continue going forward, as competitiveness in our major businesses is enhanced."
