Sell my mobile: 4G to take off in Australia
25/04/2012
4G LTE promises to revolutionize the way Aussies use their mobile phones.
The technology provides cutting-edge handsets with lightning-fast internet connectivity and could be one of the key reasons people sell their old mobiles and upgrade.
Widely tested already, the technology is expected to go mainstream in the next few years and, according to a new report from Telsyte, there will be seven million 4G-ready devices on the market in 2016.
In its Australian Mobile Services Market Study 2012, the firm said 19 per cent of phones will use the technology by the middle of that year and people will even start to abandon traditional, wired internet connections as a result.
Alvin Lee, an analyst at research specialist Telsyte, told Computer World: "4G provides a more comparable speed, and therefore is considered as an alternative fixed-line broadband offering."
However, the 4G revolution will get off to a slow start because of the limited availability of 4G-ready smartphones and tablets, he added. Apple was recently pilloried by consumers, who claimed it had misled them about the 4G capabilities of its latest iPad.
