Sell my mobile: Voice over Internet Protocol could spell end to landlines

30/04/2012

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology that includes the likes of Apple's Siri software could sound the death knell for landlines when it is made more accessible to mobile phone users.

It is currently used in social networking and new generations of smartphones, which have easily downloadable apps that people can use on Wi-Fi.

However, chief technology officer of Timico and council member of the Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association (ITSPA) Trefor Davies said all mobile phones will soon be smartphones and so this type of technology will be widespread.

The ITSPA was formed in March 2005 as a trade association to represent UK-based network operators and other such businesses with the supply of VoIP services.

"VoIP is very much used in social networking and new generations of mobile handsets. Once mobile apps for these platforms properly embrace VoIP, you can kiss goodbye to the landline," he continued.
