Westpac banks set to add mobile pay features
23/06/2012
Banks owned by financial giant Westpac have launched a new mobile banking service allowing customers to send money to other mobile phone owners directly.
Gizmodo reports the service is available from St George, the Bank of Melbourne and BankSA and works across the four major smartphone platforms - Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry.
Customers who download the mobile app for their bank will be able to send a payment to anyone who owns a phone running one of the four operating systems. The recipient receives a message with instructions on how to ensure the money goes into their account by visiting a secure site.
However, users will still need to provide their account details and bank state branch code when they log in.
Chief executive officer of St George Banking Group George Frazis said the service "offers customers a highly secure and unprecedented level of convenience".
"They'll no longer need someone’s bank account details to make a payment," he was quoted by Computerworld as saying.
