The number of downloads made through the Apple App Store has now topped 40 million, as iPhone users continue to take advantage of the games and tools on offer.
Installations tend to peak around Christmas and New Year when lucky gift recipients build up a library of applications on their new gadget, and this trend helped the American manufacturer have a record-breaking December.
More than two million downloads were made in the month, with Angry Birds, Facebook, Cut the Rope, Twitter and WhatsApp Messenger likely to be among the most popular.
Apple's Eddy Cue said: “We continue to invest in providing [developers] with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
Partially thanks to its huge 700,000-plus catalogue of apps and a high-quality approval system, ABI recently deemed the App Store the best mobile phone application storefront.
Users can browse charts for free and paid apps, perform searches to find tools suited to their needs and consult reviews to help them make informed purchase decisions.
