Apple has been given the accolade of best mobile phone application storefront, partially due to the huge catalogue of games and tools available to customers.
Those with iPhone handsets can browse through over 700,000 possible installations on the App Store, including Twitter and Temple Run.
Once developers submit their tool to iTunes, it undergoes a strict approval process which protects users from inappropriate or harmful content.
However, ABI Research's Competitive Assessment deemed Microsoft narrowly ahead of the iPad creator in the innovation criteria.
The Windows Store is said to have a more effective algorithm for ranking apps on its front page, allowing customers to find the best tools and games with ease.
Senior analyst Aapo Markkanen said: “Microsoft should be lauded for its initiative to extend its ranking algorithm beyond raw download figures.”
Its charts also take into consideration customer retention rates as well as satisfaction, so that poorly rated apps are less likely to make the top ten lists.
