People who take cash for phones and invest in a newer device could put the money gained from the sale of their old model to good use by enjoying a shopping spree.

And the best news of all may be that they can use their newly-acquired mobile to locate and purchase goods from a variety of high street stores.

New figures from the British Retail Consortium show the total number of online searches related to the retail sector grew by 27 per cent in the second quarter of 2011, compared with the same three-month period of 2010.

This was largely the result of a huge take-up of mobile shopping, with searches from phones said to increase by 216 per cent over the same period.

In addition, a 14 per cent hike in the number of people using both stores and online methods to buy goods was also recorded.

Orange recently found that 70 per cent of people do not shop online to find the best deals – something that could be costing consumers a significant sum.
