Facebook has unveiled a raft of new features that are intended to help people find out recommended places to eat, discover local events and get more out of locals businesses – all with help from the people on their friends list.
People often turn to their friends, family and loved ones for tips when they are doing anything from travelling to a new place to simply getting a haircut or to looking for a place to eat.
As such, a new tool titled Recommendations is being unrolled with the intention of making it easier for people to do just that using Facebook.
All of these suggestions from friends or groups can be gathered in one place. When writing a new post looking for advice on local places or services, users will now have the option to turn on Recommendations for that post.
If this is turned on, then all the people who can see the post will be able to comment on it with their suggestions – and all of these responses will be mapped out and saved in one place.
On the desktop version of the site, it will also be possible to go to the Recommendations bookmark to do this.
Local events can be discovered in a similar way – and this new feature comes in the form of a revamp to the Events bookmark on Facebook. It is hoped this will make the experience of looking for new events better and easier to discover.
The latest events activity from friends and hosts is displayed and event recommendations can be browsed. These are based on what's popular with friends or events that the user has connected with in the past.
Some new local business additions have also been added that make it possible to order food or request appointments directly from Facebook – and these new features will have to be added by the businesses individually.
In a statement, Facebook said that people use social media for this kind of purpose all the time, so it makes sense to enhance these possibilities with new features.
“People come to Facebook every day to connect and share experiences with friends and family. We share the great places we go and we ask our friends for advice when we need help getting things done.
“We're starting to introduce a variety of new features that help you use those connections to discover new things in the world around you, decide what to do or where to go and connect with local businesses in easier and faster ways.”
