Facebook mobile usage outstrips web activity for first time

For the first time, the number of Facebook members accessing the social network through their mobile phone outstripped those logging on through their computer.

In the fourth quarter, there were 680 million monthly active users on handsets – 57 per cent more than 12 months earlier.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said: “In 2012, we connected over a billion people and became a mobile company.”

As consumers continue to use their mobile phones to comfortably and conveniently browse while on-the-go or simply on their sofa, PCs and laptops are being neglected.

The advent of superfast 4G networks may have also encouraged extra mobile internet activity, as will the increasing sophistication of devices and software.

A specially developed Facebook smartphone app is available for those with Apple iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Nokia gadgets.

There is also a mobile optimised version of the website, which makes browsing on the small screen much more convenient.
