Apple could release the iPhone 5S as early as August, according to industry website iMore.
It claims that a source has told it the device will be ready just 11 months after the iPhone 5 was made available.
While the speculation adds to the rumours surrounding the next device from Apple, the insider said that the same basic design will be carried over to the 5S.
However, improvements will be made to the processor and camera as the tech giant looks to keep up with Samsung.
The South Korean manufacturer now claims to be the king of smartphones thanks to the success of its Galaxy S3 device, and is due to unveil the S4 at an event in New York later this month.
The presentation could raise the bar even further and it remains to be seen whether Apple will respond to this by improving the feature list for the iPhone 5S.
