Larger-screen mobile phone shipments could rocket in 2013

As more manufacturers release mobile phones with five-inch-plus screens, 'phablet' shipments are expected to double this year.

More than 60.4 million units will be delivered in 2013, according to the IHS iSuppli Mobile Handset Displays, as consumer demand rockets.

Spokesperson Vinita Jakhanwal said: “The move to offer larger-display smartphones reflects the efforts of both device and panel makers to differentiate their products.”

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 could currently be the market leader in this subdivision, but new releases like the Huawei Ascend Mate and ZTE Grand S could draw customers.

Screen size and resolution specifications are becoming more important to gadget lovers, due to ever-increasing availability of high-quality media content like videos, magazines and games.

The success of these hybrid gadgets could significantly impact the tablet market, especially as handset displays reach closer to the seven-inch standard.

Some technology industry experts are interested to see whether Apple will follow the trend in its next release – the latest iPhone 5 has a four-inch screen.
