It is expected that around 100 million new mobile phone numbers beginning with 05 will be introduced in 2017, as the supply of 04 numbers continues to diminish as mobile phone uptake increases.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is expected to announce changes to the telecommunications numbering plan, which will include the new prefix and alterations to geographic number allocation.
Increase in mobile phone usage was noted in the recent Roy Morgan Research Single Source Survey, which found that 88 per cent of people now own one.
The popularity is such that more devices are owned than there are landlines in Australia.
Chairman of the ACMA Chris Chapman said that an additional 100 million numbers will be required to provide the supply for more than 20 years.
“Demand for mobile numbers is being driven by new technologies like internet-capable smart phones, tablets and machine to machine communications,” he continued.
