Mobile phone picture messaging ‘to break records’ this Christmas

Australian telecommunications network Telstra is expecting records to be broken this Christmas, as it believes customers will send six million mobile phone picture messages over the holidays.

On December 25th, a number of people will find the latest gadgets like the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 in their stocking.

New gadget owners may be eager to see all that their recently unwrapped smartphone can do, and could take pictures of other gifts to show distant loved ones.

Those who already own modern handsets could use the camera to share pictures of Christmas dinner and family gatherings with others.

Telstra's Rebekah O’Flaherty said: “Throughout the past year we’ve seen Aussies continue to embrace picture messaging as a way to connect with family and friends.”

However, consumers are still more likely to wish their contacts a merry Christmas using the SMS function, with this provider's customers sending an estimated 125 million.
