Mobile phone recycling: Facebook phone could be ready by ‘mid-2013’

Facebook is working with designers at HTC to build its very first smartphone, which will be released as soon as mid-2013, according to sources close to the matter.

The companies had initially intended to release the device as early as Q4 of this year but have pushed back the time to give HTC more time to work on other items, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

More than half of Facebook's estimated 900 million users access the social network via their mobile devices.

UK managing director for MagicSoftware.com David Akka recently suggested that Facebook was one of the more likely candidates to purchase Research In Motion's mobile phone business.

Analyst at Topeka Capital Markets Victor Anthony said this move into mobile is to try and take advantage of marketing opportunities.

“It's a device you own and carry around with you, and it ties into the Facebook experience, it will be beneficial. They could then put a lot of ads onto the platform,” he added.
