Mobile users who opt for a smartphone with Wi-Fi coverage, perhaps after trading-in a used phone, will enjoy a high-quality service in the coming years.
Dr Steve Smith, research director at Coda Research Consultancy, says people who choose the technology over 3G will not be disappointed.
They will also no longer be reliant on their operator to provide good speed and reliability for mobile internet services.
“If [people are] in a hotspot or at home then, rather than using 3G, they'll want to use their Wi-Fi networks. This is actually really good because they'll get much faster speeds,” Mr Smith notes.
Those who opt to act on the expert's words may wish to trade-in a mobile and upgrade to models such as an Apple iPhone, BlackBerry Curve or HTC Desire.
Figures released last week by In-Stat showed more than a billion Wi-Fi chips are due to be shipped across the world each year by 2012.
