Almost a third of the world's population will have access to the internet by the end of this year, with many relying on their mobile phone to get online.
Research by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has found mobile networks are now available to more than 90 per cent of people on the planet, while some 143 nations offer 3G connectivity.
The importance of having a mobile that allows people to visit websites, send emails and access information may never have been so great, which could tempt some to trade-in their used phone and upgrade to a modern model.
Director of ITU's Telecommunication Development Bureau Sami Al Basheer noted: “Mobile phone penetration in developing countries now stands at 68 per cent – higher than any other technology before.”
One network that may be popular with those looking to use the internet from a mobile in the UK is Three, as the firm was named the best provider of broadband by respondents to a YouGov poll earlier this summer.
