OnePlus – a China-based smartphone manufacturer – has announced the launch of its latest flagship product, the OnePlus 3.
Touted as one of the most eagerly anticipated Android smartphones of the year, it is a premium device that could mount a challenge to the dominance of offerings from industry heavyweights Apple and Samsung.
OnePlus says it intends to build a better smartphone experience – and one of the key features of the handset is Dash Charge fast charging technology, which adds a day's worth of power in just half an hour.
This is made possible by replenishing over 60 per cent of the 3,000 mAh battery's charge in 30 minutes – and fast charging continues both after this point and even during this time frame if the user wishes to stream videos or play energy-intensive games.
A large current is leveraged for stable and consistent charging speeds, with more current carried than other charging solutions. This is carried out at lower temperatures by shifting the power management process from the phone itself to the adapter. As a result, the vast majority of the heat generated while charging never reaches the device.
No less than five custom safety measures complement this process, meaning the adapter, cable and phone are all safeguarded so users can charge the OnePlus 3 as quickly as possible without any cause for concern.
The device comes completely unlocked, so no carrier contracts are necessary for those who prefer SIM-only options. It also boasts an unlocked bootloader – to give users who are more confident customising their own software maximum flexibility.
Available in two colour schemes – Graphite and Soft Gold – the OnePlus 3 has an all-metal unibody carved from a single slab of space-grade aluminum alloy. This makes for a seamless and resilient build, while soft curves contrasted against sharp lines offer a comfortable grip.
It is also one of the thinner smartphones on the market at 7.3mm and its content is displayed on a 5.5-inch 1080p Optic Amoled display. A dual-polarising layer means colours are vivid and true to life – even in bright sunlight.
With a 16 MP rear camera, the OnePlus 3 boasts strong imaging with a high level of detail and clarity. This is complemented by Smart Capture, OnePlus' exclusive suite of imaging technologies, which incorporates functionalities such as HD Mode, Auto HDR and Dynamic De-noise.
The latter feature compares several frames of the same photo and blends them together in post-processing to reduce noise and save the optimal image.
A new feature dubbed Smile Capture makes it possible to take a photo using the front-facing eight MP camera simply by smiling.
OnePlus founder and chief executive officer Pete Lau said: “We know that the best smartphone is the one that works exactly how you want it to.
“The OnePlus 3 delivers that experience. It combines what our customers already love about our products with what they want and expect next. For example, Dash Charge sets a new standard for fast charging technology. It's a flagship smartphone inspired by – and made for – our fans.”
