Consumers who feel the time is right for a new handset could trade in their old mobile phone and invest in one which boasts the Android operating system, with one expert claiming the benefits of such technology.

Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine, said that there are a couple of reasons why the system has become such a success.

To begin with, many manufacturers have developed handsets which use the solution, meaning there is a range of mobile phones for consumers to pick from.

“There are Android phones from all the different manufacturers catering for all different needs and budgets, from the very affordable sub-£100 handsets to the £500 plus powerhouses that hardware-wise are better than anything else,” Mr Findlater said.

Another benefit is that the operating system offers greater flexibility than many of its rivals.

According to the latest second quarter 2011 smartphone market estimate from Canalys, Android owns 48 per cent of the global market share.
