Video phone calls may soon be possible for users of the Apple iPhone, according to one reporter.

Alexander Wolfe of InformationWeek revealed that a video calling function which is not yet available on the iPhone is included in Apple‘s patent for the handset and suggested this could be a sign of which direction the company wishes to head in over the next few years.

“The video-call feature is the boldest [part of the patent]; a potential market game changer, which could knock competitors like Palm’s Pre or Dell’s planned smartphone back off the front pages,” Mr Wolfe remarked.

He implied that one of the biggest criticisms of the iPhone so far is that it currently lacks a video calling feature.

Another feature mentioned in Apple‘s patent that could be on the cards for the future is video capture, which is already a fixture of a number of its market rivals, including the BlackBerry Bold.
