The booming mobile phone markets in many countries – including Australia – will combine to mean there are more handsets than people in the world as early as next year.
Dr Mike Short, president of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and vice-president of public affairs at Telefonica Europe, is to share his thoughts on the matter during an upcoming conference in India.
He is expected to predict the remarkable statistic will become a reality at some point in 2012.
“Internet and mobile – this combination will drive digital innovation everywhere as these technologies become ever more pervasive and useful to all people,” Dr Short stated.
It is also speculated how the world will cope with the need for mobile broadband, which is only set to rise.
Australians may be placing more demand on the industry than most, as a study by Telsyte last month found the country's citizens are likely to snap up 30 million smartphones between 2011 and 2015.
