Consumers in the UK can take cash for phones and use it to purchase a smartphone, which will soon be considered as the number one gadget.

Nicholas McQuire, research director at the International Data Corporation, has told how he believes smartphones will soon overtake computers as the must-have piece of kit among Britons.

He referred to an approximate rate of 60 per cent year-on-year growth in the industry, making it one of the country's fastest-growing markets.

“We've also seen smartphones and tablets combined grow and usurp PCs as the predominant device in terms of shipments worldwide as well,” Mr McQuire added.

He suggested that by the end of 2011, there will be about 1.3 million apps available to smartphone owners, while PC users can choose from 75,000 in comparison.

IMS Research last week revealed that about 420 million smartphones will be shipped this year – a figure it predicted will rise to a billion in 2016.
