The importance of mobile recycling in creating an eco-friendly UK may have been emphasised by new figures that have won the backing of one expert.

Sam Jarvis, head of communications at Waste Watch, says an increase in reusing materials across the country is good news.

Recent figures from Defra show some 40.1 per cent of household waste was recycled between July 2009 and June 2010 – up from 39.7 per cent between April 2009 and March 2010.

Mr Jarvis admits the statistics are “welcome”, adding: “We'd like to see this figure rising further, because we know that we probably can recycle around 60 per cent of our household waste.”

Green-thinking Britons may find they can play their part by recycling a mobile phone when it comes to the end of its life or they wish to upgrade to a newer model.

The expert notes it is now important to modernise infrastructure to give the UK the chance to up recycling rates again.
