Consumers around the country who would like to enjoy the fastest internet on the market could benefit from trading in their mobile phones.

Speaking to the Guardian Tech Weekly podcast, BT's managing director for next-generation access Bill Murphy explained that there is a “need for speed”.

He noted that his company has started the rollout of the latest technology by investing £2.5 billion in connections that will serve two-thirds of the UK.

“There is no question [that] heavy users of the internet want a better experience and want higher speeds and you are well served here in the UK,” Mr Murphy stated.

To fully take advantage of top-class internet on a variety of platforms, investing in a brand new mobile phone could be a good move.

Matthew Howett, telecoms analyst for Ovum Consulting, recently said that government plans to spend £530 million on mobile broadband connections in rural area should be allocated on a regional basis.
